Freddy’s Nightmares

Freddy’s Nightmares was a horror anthology tv series that came out in 1988. It was supposedly based on the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, but in reality, Freddy Krueger only appeared in a handful of episodes. Most of the time he was just the host, like the Cryptkeeper in Tales From The Crypt.

Freddy’s Nightmares had a very low budget and was shot on video, so it looks very bad and many of the episodes were so badly written, produced and acted that they are really not worth watching. If you really want to subject yourself to the horror of Freddy’s Nightmares, here are the three best episodes to watch:

No More Mr Nice Guy

This was the pilot episode of the series and functioned as a prequel to the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie. The episode opens with Freddy Krueger on trial for murdering children. This is Freddy before he was burned and murdered by the parents and we never get to see his face until he has his signature burns. The court fails to convict Freddy and they let him off on a technicality, so Freddy returns to his basement, puts on his glove and sets out to kill some more innocent children. He is just about to attack two young girls when an angry lynch mob shows up. The parents of the children, led by a cop, pour gasoline over Freddy and burn him alive. Later on, Freddy begins stalking the cop in his dreams. Eventually, he corners the cop in a dentist’s office and kills him by drilling his mouth with a makeshift glove equipped with drillbits on the fingers. Directed by Tobe Hooper of Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame.

Sister’s Keeper

This episode is a sequel to No More Mr Nice Guy. It follows the identical twin daughters of the cop who burned Freddy. The twins, Merit and Lisa, have some sort of psychic connection, so if one twin gets hurt in her dreams, the other twin feels the damage in real life. Merit believes she is beling stalked by Freddy and, of course, nobody believes her. Everyone in school makes fun of her and Lisa poses as Merit in order to experience all the bullying her sister faces in the classroom. Eventually, Lisa believes her sister is right about Freddy and the two twins join forces in an attempt to defeat Freddy in their dreams. When they wake up, they believe Freddy is gone for good, but Freddy’s hand appears from the sofa and kills Lisa. Merit is left to live in fear, never knowing when Freddy is going to strike.

Freddy’s Tricks and Treats

This special Halloween episode takes place at night in a medical school. On Halloween night, a female student decides to forget about partying and prepares for her exams by going to the school in the middle of the night and carrying out a dissection on a corpse. After she hears about a local child-killer named Freddy Krueger, terrifying things start to happen. Dead bodies seem to come to life and she has horrifying visions and dreams where she is toremented by Freddy. Eventually, she is driven into a complete nervous breakdown and seeks help from a research scientist who is able to record her dreams using a strange device he invented.
