Shadows of the Night is a Halloween poem for kids. It is based on a poem called “Bird of the Night” by Randall Jarrell.
Dark shadows float through the moonlight.
Their wings don’t make a sound.
Their claws are long, their eyes burn bright.
As the witching hour comes round.
They screech and wail. They shriek and cry
As the wind, it shifts and heaves.
The creatures land upon your roof
And crawl beneath the eaves.
You curl up in your bed so small
And the night wind holds its breath.
The shadows creep across your wall,
And all is still, as still as death.
