Driving in the Snow

Driving in the Snow is a scary story about delivery man who is transporting a coffin during a snowstorm. It is based on an old short story called “The Last Drive”.

Driving in the Snow

It was a cold November night and the snow lay thick on the ground. The wind was whistling through the bare branches of the trees, making them click and clack together like bones in the night. Jeb Walsh was driving his van down a lonely country road.

He glanced up at the sky. It looked like there was a blizzard on the way. He hoped he wouldn’t get caught in a storm. He didn’t want to be stuck out on the road on a night like this.

Jeb was a delivery man, but tonight he was transporting a very special cargo. Just the thought of it was enough to give him the creeps. Behind him, in the back of the van, there was a coffin and inside that coffin was a fresh corpse.

The dead man had been killed in a car accident. His parents lived more than 200 miles away, but they wanted to bury him in their family plot. Jeb was being paid wuite a lot of money to transport the dead man’s body. It was more than he usually made in a week.

Jeb didn’t like the idea of being this close to a corpse. It made him strangely nervous. Although he knew there was nothing to be afraid of, he couldn’t help checking his rear view mirror every few minutes.

The road was icy and Jeb didn’t want to drive too fast. The miles rolled by slowly and the snow piled up in drifts by the roadside. The empty fieldson his left and right looked like big thick white blankets.

Just then, he came to a steep hill. He increased his speed as he went up, but close to the top, his wheels suddenly began spinning. They couldn’t grip on the icy surface of the road. He floored the accelerator and gradually, the van inched its way up to the top of the hill and as it struggled over, Jeb breathed a sigh of relief.

All of a sudden, he heard a loud bang and a clatter and the van slowly ground to a halt. The headlights went out and he was surrounded by darkness and silence.

For a moment, Jeb sat there motionless as the horror of the situation sank in. He was stranded with a corpse, miles from the nearest town and with no phone to call for help.

He tried to calm down and told himself that he was letting his imagination get the better of him. There really wasn’t any danger. Sooner or later, another car would come along and he could hitch a ride with them.

He waited and waited, but the road was silent and deserted. Eventually, Jeb grew tired and resigned himself to spending the night in the van. It was too cold in the front seat, so he climbed into the back and wrapped an old dirty blanket around himself, just to keep warm.

He was very tired, but he couldn’t relax. The idea of sleeping next to a coffin bothered him. He was half-expecting to see the coffin lid suddenly open and something horrible leap out. He listened to the soft patter of the snow outside and felt the gentle rocking of the van in the wind and gradually drifted off to sleep.

All of a sudden, he woke up. Sitting bolt upright, he had the horrible feeling that something was wrong. The van was moving.

When Jeb turned around, he was shocked to see a man in the front, hunched over the wheel, driving the van.

“Hey!” he shouted. “What do you think you’re doing!”

The man didn’t turn around. his hands gripped the wheel tighter and he pressed down on the accelerator. The van was moving faster and faster.

“Stop!” Jeb cried.

Just then, the man turned around and leered at him. His skin was pale, his cheeks were sunken and he had a grotesquely evil grimace on his face.

In the dim light, Jeb recognized the face.

“Oh God!” he screamed.

The man at the wheel let out a horrible gurgling laugh. He floored the accelerator and the van hurtled through the storm at an alarming speed, lurching back and forth and rocking and swaying from side to side. Snow whirled past in great white clouds and the wind howled like a maniac while Jeb just screamed and screamed and screamed.

Hours later, the storm died down and police were able to extract Jeb Walsh’s mangled body from the wreckage.

One of the police officers was scratching his head.

“I guess the corpse probably fell out of the coffin during the crash,” he said, “but what I don’t understand is how it came to be sitting in the front seat…”
