Attic

The Attic is a scary story for kids about an old man who hears a strange noise late at night. It is based on an old folktale. A version of this story appeared in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

There was an old man who lived all alone in an old house in the woods. He kept to himself mostly and rarely went into town. He spent all day in the forest, hunting for food and when it got dark, he would come home and cook his dinner.

One dark night, the old man had just finished his meal when he heard a strange noise. It sounded like something was moving around in the attic.

He picked up his gun and loaded it, trying not to make any noise. Then, he took off his shoes and socks and slowly climbed the attic stairs without making a sound.

Slowly, the old man tip-toed up the creaking steps, until at last, he reached the attic door. For a moment, he stood outside, just listening, but he couldn’t hear a thing.

Then, he suddenly threw open the door, rushed inside and let out a blood-curdling scream…

“AAAAAAAAAAAH!”

Why did he scream?

You’d scream too if you stepped on a nail in your bare feet.
