At the Stroke of Midnight is a scary horror comic about a married couple searching for treasure in an old house. It appeared in Tower of Shadows #1 (1969) and won the Alley Award for Best Feature Story.
One night, a married couple named Lou and Marie arrive at an old, dark house on a hill. Lou inherited the house when his uncle died.
The electricity is off, so they strike a match and go inside.
Marie thinks the old man had a fortune hidden in his house and she means to search all night until she finds it.
Lou is frightened by the shadows in the house and all of a sudden, he lets out a scream.
Lou insists that the portrait was pointing to a door.
When they open the door, all they find is a room filled with books.
They move the grandfather clock and find a secret passage behind it.
At the end of the passage, they come to a door.
Inside, they find a fortune in gold and jewels.
Another door swings open and Lou and Marie find themselves in France at the time of the French Revolution. The baying crowd think they are King Louis and Marie Antoinette.
This was so scary I forgot to scream. Someone remind me in about ten years
