Birds Singing

Birds Singing is a spooky story about someone who is kept awake by the sound of birds chirping at night outside their window.

Last Summer, it was very hot and every night, I had to sleep with the window open. Usually, I sleep soundly, but one night, I couldn’t get to sleep. I kept tossing and turning.

I could hear the sound of birds singing outside my window and it was keeping me awake. There was a large tree outside my window and that’s where the sound was coming from.

Eventually, I realized that there was no way I could fall asleep with that damned noise, so I leaned out the window and shouted, “Come on! Shut up! Shoo! Shoo! Go away!”

I listened for the flapping of wings, but there was nothing.

“Go on, shoo!” I shouted.

Then it dawned on me… It was after 2:00 AM. What birds could be singing at that time? They should all be asleep by now…

I peered into the darkness. I wish I hadn’t.

In the swaying branches of the tree, I could make out two dark silhouettes. They looked almost human. The figures were perched on a branch of the tree, directly across from my window.

I felt sick. The air was thick and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. Hastily, I shut the window and as I did, I could hear soft laughter coming from the tree.

Needless to say, I didn’t get any sleep that night. I went around the apartment, making sure every window was closed and every door was securely locked.

Now, I’m afraid to leave my windows open ever again…
