Scary For Kids

Dare

The Dare is a scary tale about a young girl whose bravery is put to the test when she accepts the challenge of sticking a knife in the grave of an old woman who is rumored to have been a witch. This story is also known as “The Girl Who Stood On The Grave”, “The Graveyard Dare” and “She’s Got Me”. Versions of the legend appeared in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Favorite Scary Stories of American Children and Short Scary Stories.

The Dare

One night, in a small American town, a young girl threw a party and invited all her friends from school. There was a large group of boys and girls and, as the night went on, they began telling scary stories.

One boy said he had heard an urban legend about an old graveyard that was located near the girl’s house. According to the story, an old woman had been buried in the middle of the cemetery and there were rumors that she was a witch. They said that if someone stood on her grave at midnight, she would grab them and drag them down to hell.

“I would never go near that graveyard after dark”, another boy said.

“You’re all a bunch of morons,” laughed the girl who owned the house. “It’s just a silly superstition. I can’t believe you’d take it seriously.”

The boy who had told the story turned to her and sneered, “It’s all very well to be brave when you’re safe and warm in your own home. I think you’d have a different attitude if you actually went to that graveyard.”

“It wouldn’t make a difference,” replied the girl haughtily.

“OK, then prove it!” said the boy. “We’ll all go down to the cemetery and wait outside while you go in and stand on the old witch’s grave.”

“A grave doesn’t scare me,” said the girl. “I’ll do it right now.”

“You’ll have to prove you really did it,” said the boy. “Otherwise you might chicken out.”

He took a knife from the kitchen drawer and handed it to her.

“Stick this knife in the grave,” he said. “Then we’ll know you were there for sure.”

The group of kids set out for the graveyard and when they reached the old iron gates, they gathered in a circle. All of them stared at the girl. She tried to pretend she wasn’t scared and she hoped they didn’t see her shivering in fear.

With the knife clutched tightly in her hand, the girl walked through the old iron gateway and made her way through the darkened graveyard. In the moonlight, the tombstones and the trees cast strange and unnerving shadows. Eventually, she came to the old woman’s grave.

“There is nothing to be scared of,” the girl told herself. “It’s just a stupid story.”

Crouching in front of the headstone, she whispered, “I’m not afraid of you.”

Then she raised the knife above her head and thrust it into the earth.

“Take that, you old witch,” she chuckled.

The girl was about to turn and leave, when she felt something holding her back. She couldn’t move. Something was tugging on the hem of her dress and dragging her down.

She was filled with terror and flew into a panic. “Help!” she cried. “She’s got me! She’s got me!”

When she didn’t come back, her friends began to get worried. After a while, they cautiously entered the graveyard to look for her. They found her sprawled across the old woman’s grave. She was dead and her face was frozen in a silent scream.

Without realizing it, she had plunged the knife through her skirt and had pinned it to the ground. That was what had been holding her.

The poor girl had been so terrified that her heart gave in and she died of fright.

  • Nice story. I don’t know the point of proving you’re brave by going to graveyards when games like Dead Space and Silent Hill and Fear are available. Play them and show the world you’re brave.

  • Poor girl. She must have not done that. People always try to show their courage in one way or the other. This is wrong the thing which you haven’t done before or you aren’t capable of should not be done.

  • I know a Persian version where the main character was a cowardly man who was going to stick a spike in the graveyard and the same thing happened to him…

  • imagine how the friends would have told the story to the parents… one moment she stabbed her skirt with a knife and the next she died due to fright…

  • What a silly girl! Never accept a dare to go to the graveyard in the middle of the night. Trust me.

  • I reminds me of an episode of “Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction”. Except it wasn’t a party, it was two girls and one guy and instead of a witch it was a serial killer.

  • Wow nice story, gotta say stupid girl, shouldn’t have gone there at the first place.

  • I remember this story from so many books like scary stories to tell in the dark and at school last year in the 6th grade my class read a story like this except it was about this coward name Ivan and the same thing happened.

  • Hey guys here is a story I wrote
    The Bookshelf
As a little girl growing up without many people in her life, I always turned to in animate objects to keep me happy. My mother always knew I loved stuffed animals and whenever she went to the store or out to get something , she would always buy me a stuffed animal and place it on my bookshelf in my room so she would surprise me when I came home from school. I would name each and every one of them and pretend I was their mommy and feed them.

After we all moved to a new house with my new stepfather and step brother when I was about 8 or 7 , I got an even bigger built in bookshelf in my bedroom. I started collecting more and more stuffed animals , I drove my mother crazy since she knew I would expect a new stuffed animal on my shelf every day when I came home from school. All she wanted to do was please me , being the caring mom she was and she always bought me new stuffed animals , even if money was tight.

One day when I was eating my cereal in the kitchen with my new step sibling , my mother suddenly bolted from her bedroom with the biggest smile on her face. I asked her why she was so happy even though it was so early in the morning. She replied ” Because sweetie. I am planning on my making my little cupcake the happiest of them all when I get her..” I knew what she was going to say. I almost jumped out of my seat when she finally said after a pause ” A big pink puppy! “. I was estatic. I had been asking my mother for a certain pink but very large puppy I saw at the store a few weeks earlier. Since I was keeping my grades up and being nice to people at my school , she said. I got a special reward.

“When will I get it?” I asked eagerly. My mother was already half late for work and replied ” When do you think?” She smiled and kissed me and my new brother and ran out the door. I couldn’t believe it. I now would have that pink puppy I had been dying for. There it would be , on my shelf , smiling at me and protecting me and there I would be staring at it and admiring it. I quietly got on my jacket , put on my rain boots and ran up the street to my bus stop. I couldn’t wait for my big surprise when I got home that day.

All day at school I got a strange feeling that something bad was going to happen. I shrugged it off as just me being overly excited which I probably never felt before. I anticipated the moment when I would see that big pink puppy on my shelf when I walked in my room. I waited for this since forever! When my bus stopped at my stop I charged right through the sea of people and ran home , as fast as my little legs could carry me. This was gonna be the best day of my life!

When I stepped through the door my excitement finally came to a sudden hault. The air was musty and I got an eerie feeling something or someone was watching me. I took a few steps and starred at the stairs leading up to my bedroom. I got a feeling that something wasn’t right. Nonetheless , I stared slowly and quietly walking up those steps. I finally came to my bedroom door. I opened the door and stood there in the doorway. I peered inside and saw something peculier. right on the middle shelf , in the center was a smiling black puppy. He had beaty eyes that were sharply staring at me. He was just sitting there , like he knew he wasn’t suppose to be there and he was proud. I knew my mom should have been home by now so I called out for her while still staring at the puppy. I said ” Hey mom! Why did you get me a black puppy instead of a pink one?”

    I waited for a response.

I felt eerie and very scared. I backed out of the room and suddenly a hand from the bathroom grabbed me and pulled me inside.

I tried to scream but it put it’s hand on my mouth. I looked up to see that it was my mom with a sheer look of panic on her face.

She then looked at me dead in the eye and said. “When I came home that thing was in your room, holding a knife and hiding under your bed.”
