Pencil Game

Charlie Charlie: The Pencil Game is an old Mexican tradition. It is a supernatural ritual that is used to contact a ghost. It is sometimes called “Six Pencils”, “Charlie Charlie Are You There?” or “The Charlie Charlie Challenge”. Some people believe that you are contacting the spirit of a young boy who killed himself. Others believe this ritual is dangerous and that you are, in actual fact, contacting a demon.

Charlie Charlie

How to Play Charlie Charlie

You need a sheet of paper and two pencils.

Step 1: Take the piece of paper and draw two lines on it, forming a cross. Write “Yes” in the top left and bottom right squares and “No” in the other two squares, as in the picture above.

Step 2: Place a pencil on the line going left and right and balance another pencil on top of it, along the line going up and down.

Step 3: Say the following chant twice out loud: “Charlie, Charlie, can we play?”

Charlie will make the pencil point to either “Yes” or “No”

You can now proceed to ask questions and Charlie will answer them with either “Yes” or “No”.

To end the game, you must chant “Charlie, Charlie, can we stop?” When you get a “Yes”, you say “Goodbye” and remove the pencils from the paper to break contact. If he says “No”, keep trying until you get a “Yes”.

How to Play Six Pencils

Pencil Game

The Pencil Game can only be played with two people. You need six unsharpened pencils.

Step 1: Each person takes three pencils and arranges them to form three sides of a square (as in the picture above). The ends of your pencils should be touching. You should be holding the pencils at the sharpened tip.

Step 2: Both of you say the following chant twice: “Charlie, Charlie, can we play?”

If the pencils move inwards, the answer is “Yes”.
If the pencils move outwards, the answer is “No”.
If one side moves inwards and the other moves outwards, it means “Maybe”, or that the question cannot be answered.
Also, up means “Yes” and down means “No”.

Step 3: You ask the spirit of Charlie Yes or No questions. He will indicate his answer by moving the pencils.

To end the game, you both must chant “Charlie, Charlie, can we stop?” When the pencils move inwards or upwards, you drop them to the floor and say “Goodbye” to break contact.

Stories and Experiences with the Charlie Charlie Pencil Game

“When I was younger, we used to play a game called Six Pencils… They truly moved! It was crazy. They answered questions that nobody could have known. My Mom told me it was demons we were talking to, so I stopped.”

“My friends played the Pencil Game and they got in contact with a ghost named Charlie that had died of child abuse. But things soon went bad. One of my friends saw a dark figure on her roof when she was home alone. Another heard scratching on her bathroom door and dark laughing. Another felt her blanket on her bed being pulled down when she was sleeping and then she also heard laughing. Another saw a dark shape hanging from her roof. All of these things happened when they were alone. Soon they got scared and stopped playing the game and put up crosses in their rooms and never went near that stuff again and it all stopped.”

“The game “Charlie, Charlie” was a big thing at my school, and I came home and played it with my Mom. My Mom and Dad got all mad and said that the game was just like the ouija board. Supposedly it’s a call to the devil… No offense, but it’s scary… I started hearing things around my house after I played it”

There are no reports of anyone dying or being possessed by demons after playing the Pencil Game so it is considered quite safe. However, we still advise you not to play it, just in case.

  • I’m trying to play the game with someone but no one will play with me… I guess that means at a sleepover! õ.õ

  • It might take me a while to get over that experience to even play another game like that. Haha

  • I don’t think I can play a game like the Ouija board. I played the Ouija board once and it scared the living daylights out of me. My friend and I were playing and I asked what my deceased grandfather’s name was and it got it right. What made it creepy was that my friend couldn’t have moved it because she doesn’t know who my is. So I’m going to say…. NOPE. :’D

  • Awesome! I am so trying this! ( It is surprising that I think a ghost game is safe…cuz normally, I don’t…)

  • Totally fun. It works. I done this in class. Just remember day goodbye. My friends got freaked out amd dropped em. I summoned him again and asked if he liked me and said no. It is still fun game to play.

  • I played so many time its quite interesting and nothing has happened to me or my friends since we played but I do believe there is some truth to this game.

  • Guys this game is really AWESOME! I suggest you play it, you know, for fun. I never got haunted. The day I played it my family decided to leave me alone at the house. Nothing happened C:

    Really cool game.

  • Me and my best friend play it a lot he never does anything scary to us he’s like our friend and he didn’t die from abuse my friend asked him only yes or no questions. DONT LET THE PENCILS CROSS THAT’S THE WORST THING THAT CAN HAPPEN IF THEY TRY TO DROP THEM don’t try making him mad that’s when they cross. I have tried asking Charlie if I could talk to my favorite uncle he died when I was 10 I still miss him really bad.

  • I tried this n it worked but when I asked to stop the pencils moved inwards n made a crossor x n we got scared n dropped them

  • PEOPLE DONT PLAY IT ITS BAD
    i wanna try it but i know it’s bad… 0_0

  • I’ve actually played something like this when I was younger but it was different. My cousin taught it to me, we could use our hands and make two L’s with it and connect it like this |__| or use pencils as well but we used our hands more. Instead of saying Charlie, you said Devil three times. You didn’t have to ask if you could ask a question or say goodbye, you just said your question. If yes, it moved into a triangle. If maybe, it moved halfway. If no, then it stayed to the same position. I wasn’t really freaked out playing it since I never experienced anything. I taught some people how to do it with pencils and they thought of it foolish so I stopped playing it but now that I think about, it seems scary.

  • I did it! So fun! Me and mah friend Steph did it. Turns out, Stephs crush loves her and mine does too xD

  • I played it with my friend, it was fun, but really, we had nothing happen. We played it at my house two weeks ago, and still nothing has happened.

A paster came to pray. I told her about it and she said that charlie still wants to play we open a door and don’t close it then after she came 2 pray i could sleep again plz i beg Ï… guys DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME!!!

  • There’s a similar ‘game’, and it is kind of… well, really creepy.
You see, two months I went to the annual school trip to celebrate the start of the school year. We were eating in the assigned ‘huts.’ However, mostly everyone left quite quickly, leaving my best friend, another girl and me alone in the hut. My best friend and I were about to leave, but decided to talk to the other girl. She was holding a book and scissors. She kept talking to herself and pointing at certain lines with her scissors. My friend approached her and asked her what she was doing. She explained she was asking question to the book. We got curious. She explained that, just like the pencil game, we have to ask if we can play first while turning the book two times. Then we had to open the book at a random pahe and put the scissors on a random line, which would supposedly have the answer. My friend tried, and it kept saying ‘no’. It was really creepy, and when another friend tried later on, he pointed to a line that said ‘yes, with a friend…’ needless to say, he ran out of the hut… I wouldn’t recommend playing it either of these games.
