Tower of London

With over 400 years of gruesome history of torture, violence, execution and murder it’s no wonder the Tower is considered to be one of Britain’s most haunted places in addition to being its oldest fortress, palace and prison.

One of the Tower’s most well-known ghosts is that of Anne Boleyn, the famous wife of Henry VIII who he had beheaded in the Tower in 1536. It is said that the ghost of Lady Jane Grey also is at the castle.

People have reported seeing phantom carriages, and dogs are even too afraid to go near the Salt Tower, where royalty used to be held before execution.

  • Ah, if you would like to have more to add to this? Um.. Okay: It was built over 1000 years ago.
In 1483, 2 young princes, 12 year old Edward V and his brother, Richard, 10. Edward was the new young king, and Richard was next in line to the throne, and the Duke of York. Their uncle, Richard III wanted to rule England, so he had them locked up in the Tower, and most likely secretly murdered. Though nobody knows for sure what happened, the boys disappeared and were never seen again. Over the next 200 years, their ghosts appeared, until workmen discovered the skeletons of 2 boys in a wooden chest. No one really knows whether or not they were the princes’, but they were given a royal burial and the princes’ ghosts have not been seen since.
Considered one of the most gruesome sightings that are reported are those of the Countess of Salisbury. She was beheaded in 1541, at the order of Henry VIII, who claimed she wanted to take the throne from him. She was 70 years old at this time. She managed to escape the executioner, somehow, but he chased her around the yard of the Tower wielding an ax until she was caught. May 27, the day the Countess died, this scene is played out in ghostly form.
