What Goes Around Comes Around

When I was in school, there was this kid that always bothered me. His name was Kenny. I can’t explain why, but his face simply got on my nerves. Everything about him just annoyed me to no end. He was the biggest nerd you ever came across, but he was always trying to fit in. It was as if he thought he was as good as everyone else, as if he believed he deserved the same respect as everybody else. I couldn’t stand his attitude.

I wasn’t the only one. Everyone else in class could tell he was just a joke. One day, I decided to mess with him just to get a few laughs. I started out with the usual harassment, calling him names and making crude jokes about him. People thought it was hilarious, so I took it a bit further. Whenever I passed by him in the school corridor, I would bump into him on purpose or give him a hard shove and send him flying. You know how fun that kind of stuff can be, when you slap the books out of some nerd’s hand or knock the glasses off his face.

However, despite all my efforts, Kenny still hadn’t learned his lesson. He didn’t understand that some of us are born to be winners and others are born to be losers. That’s just the way it is. So, to knock some sense into him, I stepped up my game a little. I continued to get more and more aggressive. It progressed from pushing and shoving to punching and kicking. I started leaving actual bruises on poor little Kenny.

Everybody else in class told me I was taking it too far, but I didn’t care. I always take it to the edge. That’s how I roll. It felt good to be able to beat up on someone weaker than me. Pounding his face was like some kind of weird stress relief. Each time I punched him, I felt better about myself. All of my anger and resentment was washed away when I stomped on his head. It was like an addiction. I couldn’t have stopped harassing him, even if I wanted to.

Some kids will tell the teacher when you bully them and in the end, you are forced to leave them alone. Kenny wasn’t that smart. Instead, he kept his mouth shut and tried to ignore me. That only made it worse. Kenny’s grades started to slip and he began skipping school.

The whole class knew that I was the cause of Kenny’s frequent absences, but they were all too scared to say anything about it. I heard them whispering behind my back and saying that Kenny didn’t deserve the way I was treating him.

After a while, I got sick and tired of Kenny not turning up at school. I missed having someone to beat up on. One day, when Kenny skipped school again, I went looking for the bunch of losers he called “friends” and decided to ask them a few questions regarding Kenny.

I walked up to the weakest looking guy and said, “Hey you! What’s up with your fellow freak, Kenny? That weakling hasn’t come to class lately and I want to know why.”

I could tell the guy was scared and who could blame him? After all, I am the toughest guy in high school. When he tried to answer me, he couldn’t help stuttering.

“I-I-I don’t know, J-J-Johnny,” he managed to spit out. “I-I-I haven’t see-seen Kenny a-around late-late-lately myself.”

I just couldn’t stop myself from laughing at his stupid stutter.

“What? W-W-What? Sorry, I couldn’t understand a word you said. I don’t speak retard. Haha.”

He looked like he was about to cry, which made me chuckle even more.

One of the other nerds sneered at me.

“Why don’t you grow up,” he muttered under his breath.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“What did you say to me, you little worm?” I demanded, grabbing him by his shirt collar and pushing him up against a locker.

“You heard me, Johnny,” he said, defiantly. “I’m not afraid of you. One of these days you’re going to get what you deserve.”

I was just about to give that worm the beating of a lifetime when a teacher happened to walk around the corner.

“What are you kids doing to each other?” she demanded.

“Nothing, Miss,” I said. “Just helping my buddy here with some girl problems.”

I could tell she swallowed my lie. After all, I’ve had a lot of practice. I’ve been lying all my life.

“Very well,” she snapped. “Carry on.”

I was tempted to pound the outspoken nerd right in front of her, but he wasn’t worth it. Instead, I just walked away.

I heard the nerd’s words echoing down the corridor after me.

“What goes around comes around, Johnny,” he said. “One of these days, kharma is going to come back and bite you on the backside.”

I just shrugged it off and left.

That evening, when school finished, I decided to track Kenny down. When I got to his house, I went up to the front door and knocked twice. No answer. I pounded the door with my fists until I heard a voice from inside shouting, “Coming!”

When he opened the door, Kenny was shocked to see me standing there. A look of terror spread across his face.

“Wh-what are you doing here, John?” he croaked. He looked frightened.

“I was missing my best friend,” I replied. “Come on, Kenny. Let’s you and me take a walk. We’ve got a lot of stuff to catch up on.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” he said nervously.

“Why, Kenny? Are your parents home?”

“No,” he replied.

“Well, I just want to apologize to you for the way I’ve been treating you recently,” I said. “Come on, don’t be a wimp. Give me a few minutes to tell you how sorry I am.”

I could tell that he was surprised.

“Ok,” he said, shutting the front door behind him. “But only for a few minutes.”

As we walked down the street together, he had no idea what I had planned for him. When we arrived at the park, it was deserted. Perfect, I thought. No witnesses.

“So, like I was telling you. I want to apologize for the way I’ve been treating you recently,” I announced.

“Really?” he asked.

“Yeah.” A sly smile spread across my face. “Since you started skipping school, I haven’t had a chance to beat you up and I’m sorry about that.”

His face was annoying me more than usual today.

“Why are you doing this to me, Johnny?” he pleaded.

“Because, Kenny, I hate every fiber of your being. I don’t know why, but that’s just the way it is. You’re a problem to me.”

“How can I stop being a problem to you?” he whined.

“Well for one thing you could disappear,” I said. “I mean, no one would miss you. Your parents wouldn’t even notice the difference.”

He was getting nervous. I could smell his fear.

“I don’t want to disappear,” he said. “You’re just going to have too accept the fact that I am staying at school, no matter what you do to me.”

I started getting angry.

“Kenny, I think you misunderstood me,” I growled. “I didn’t mean disappear from the school, I meant the planet.”

A look a terror washed over his face. He turned to run but I grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and slammed him face-first onto the ground. After that, I went to town on him, punching and kicking, releasing all my aggression. I was in an uncontrollable rage. By the time I was done, I was breathing heavily and sweat was dripping off my forehead.

Then, I looked down and realized that Kenny wasn’t moving. His face was nothing but a bloody red pulp. He was dead.

As the horrible truth sank in, I began to panic. I only wanted to beat him black and blue. I never intended to kill him. It was an accident. I wasn’t to blame. He had brought it on himself. His face was just too damn irritating and punchable. I couldn’t help myself.

Thinking quickly, I realized that I had to dispose of the body. I considered chopping him up with an axe, but that would be too much work. Instead, I decided to hide the body and make it appear that he had run away from home. I dragged his corpse over to a big heap of compost, dead leaves and grass clippings and concealed it as best I could.

That evening, I went home, took a shower, changed my clothes and worked on creating an alibi for myself, in case the cops came around asking questions. I would tell them that I had been home the whole time.

Time passed slowly and eventually night fell. It was time to sneak into the park and bury Kenny properly. When I got to the spot where I hid the body, I pulled back the grass and dead leaves. To my astonishment, I realized that the corpse was missing. There was no sign of it. I sifted through the entire pile of compost but but it wasn’t there anymore.

I was horrified and paranoid thoughts flashed through my mind. What if the bod had already been discovered. Perhaps someone had seen me kill him and contacted the police. I couldn’t go to prison. I wouldn’t last a day. The jails are full of hardened criminals who show no mercy. I’d die in there. What if the cops were already looking for me? What do I do?

I decided to go on the lam. Running away and laying low for a while was the best option. I would collect some clothes from my house, steal some money from my parents and just book it.

When I got home, I went upstairs and started searching my parents’ bedroom. I found my Dad’s credit card in the wardrobe and rifled through my Mom’s purse. Just as I was putting my clothes into a backpack, I heard the front door opening.

“Mom is that you?” I shouted.

There was no answer.

“Who is it?” I called. “I know there’s someone in the house! I heard you come in!”

I had never felt more paranoid in my life. Then, I heard the sound of footsteps downstairs and a voice said, “You went too far this time.”

I swallowed hard. I recognized that voice. It was Kenny.

This can’t be happening, I told myself. I must be going crazy.

“Your’re going to pay for what you’ve done,” said the voice.

Just ignore the voice and maybe it will go away, I told myself.

“I’m not going away, John,” said the voice. “Not this time…”

“Stop It!” I cried. “You’re supposed to be dead!”

“Come and find me, John,” said the voice.

“Ok, I’ll play your damn game,” I shouted. I had to win. A wave of nervousness hit me. I had to find the corpse before my parents came home and discovered it. I had to start looking, but where? Where should I look? Where was he hiding?

I ran to the bathroom. Was that a shadow behind the shower curtain? The anticipation was killing me. I mustered up enough courage to slowly draw it back.

There was nothing behind it.

I hurried downstairs to the kitchen and proceeded to search through all the cabinets.

“I’m sorry!” I cried. “Please don’t do this to me, I beg of you!”

“Oh your sorry?” replied the voice. “Well that just solves everything, doesn’t it? Can sorry bring me back to life?”

I dashed upstairs to my parents room and looked under the bed. Nothing. I cursed under my breath. Why couldn’t I find him? Where had I forgotten to check?

Then it suddenly came to me. The closet in my bedroom. Of course!

I ran to my bedroom and threw open the closet door open. The stench almost made me vomit. I shouldn’t have hidden him in the compost heap. There he lay. His body decomposing in the cramped space. I held my nose and tried not to breathe in the putrid smell.

“Are you happy now?” I screamed at the top of my lungs. “I found you! Now, will you leave me alone?”

There was a deafening silence. Complete and utter silence. Then the lights went out.

“Why are you doing this to me?” I cried.

In my left ear, I heard Kenny’s chilling whisper. “Because your face annoys me.”

Cold, dead hands clutched at my face, scratching and gouging. I struggled to free myself but i couldn’t squirm out of his icy grip. My entire face felt like it was on fire. The pain was unbearable. I lost conciousness and slipped into the endless darkness.

The police found me a few hours later on the street outside. They said I was lying in the gutter, clutching Kenny’s moldy corpse in my arms. My face was covered in blood and all of the skin was missing. On the floor of my bedroom, they found my eyes.

After spending almost a year in hospital, recovering from my injuries, they put me on trial for Kenny’s murder. I was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

You know what they do to you in prison, don’t you? Especially when you’re blind and have no way of defending yourself. It’s not a pretty picture.

My life is a living hell. I’m at the mercy of the other inmates. They prey on people who are weaker than they are. The abuse and torture never ends. Every day, they beat me within an inch of my life and when I complain to the prison guards, they just laugh and call me names.

It’s true what they say. The bad things you do come back to bite you in the end. What goes around, comes around.
